remedies will prove efficacious. British Medical Science
acknowledges I think that the cure of Leprosy is beyond
Medical ken at present, but I think it possible that
the experience of Three thousand years may have stumbled
upon a remedy unknown to the Pharmacopoeia.

But to make satisfactory investiga-
tions into the origin and cure of these and other diseases
would require the constant work of a trained bacterialo-
gist. Dr. Thomson is accumulating valuable observations
on mosquitos; but Dr. Thomson has his ordinary Medical
work to attend to, and he has not gone through the
necessary training in bacteriology. I have, therefore,
the honour to request, if you should approve of my sug-
gestion, which will I have no doubt be endorsed by the
Legislative Council, that you will direct inquiry to
be nade, and if possible that a competent bacteriologist
be engaged for work in this Colony, at a salary to be
determined by you,
